How to deal with a car salesman
It is important to note here at the start, not all car lots use high pressure and dishonest methods to make their money. It is just as important to note that a great many of them will lie and cheat you any way they can. It is a safer assumption to think they are like the second group that lies and cheats. If you assume that the person you will buy your next car from is going to lie, pressure you and try to make as big a commission as they can from your car purchase then you will go prepared.
The problem is that when you need a car you have to go find it, negotiate a deal and then pay for it whether the deal was a good one or you were overcharged. This could add up to three to five thousand dollars or more. If you are purchasing the car by financing it you could easily pay a hundred dollars or more per month than you should have had to and that is a lot to loose from your families monthly income.
There are a number of steps you can take to protect yourself and come out of the dealership with a car you are happy with and at a price you are comfortable with. It is just as easy to come out of a dealership with a great vehicle and a deal that you more than comfortable with. It all depends on how well prepared you are for the process of new car shopping.
By prepared we mean research. An hour or two of reading reviews can help you pick the best car for your needs. If you take the time while doing that research and find out the true market value or what the average customer is willing to pay for that same vehicle then you know what you should pay and work to avoid paying more than that amount.
While researching the new vehicle you want and its true market value you should take time to find out the value of your trade in if you will be trading in another car. This is a great bargaining chip an when you go prepared with what you will pay for the new car and what you expect to get for your used car you send a clear message that you will not be “ripped off”.
Some shoppers will bypass the salesperson completely by calling and speaking to the general sales manager. They make the deal over the phone and often save a large sum of money this way.
Keep in mind that the car lot must make some profit and sales forces need to make commissions so everyone can eat, pay bills and live their own lives. How much of a profit they make on your new vehicle purchase is a matter of how well prepared you are when you go in.
